Salonicco, la seconda capitale greca (così chiamata non solo per la sua estensione, ma anche perchè è la capitale della Macedonia del Nord), non è una città in cui vi consiglierei di trascorrere una vacanza, ma qualunque sia il motivo che vi spinga in questa metropoli greca, tranquilli, anche questo luogo ha i suoi aspetti positivi.
Vediamo quali sono.
Thessaloniki, the second capital of Greece (so called not only for its size, but also because it is the capital of Northern Macedonia), is a city where I would not recommend you spend a vacation, but for whatever reason you to stay in this city, don't worry, this place has its good points!
Let's see what they are.
Salonicco è la città più grande della Grecia dopo Atene, per cui è dotata di un proprio aeroporto da cui arrivano e partono voli a ottimi prezzi. L'aeroporto è poco distante dal centro cittadino: il bus di collegamento è il numero 78.
E' stato proprio grazie ai prezzi convenienti degli aerei che mi sono ritrovata in questa città (per trascorrere, poi, le vacanze estive tra la Penisola Calcidica e l'incantevole Meteora), che immaginavo molto più carina e accogliente.
Salonicco mostra i segni di politiche scellerate e di un'edilizia non ragionata(anche nelle vie del centro storico ci sono esclusivamente fatiscenti palazzi anni '70): ammirandola dall'alto, sembra di avere di fronte una baraccopoli.
Ma questa città è un punto strategico per visitare incantevoli località greche, come la Penisola Calcidica o Meteora, davvero poco distanti e facilmente raggiungibili anche con i mezzi pubblici (per maggiori info, date un'occhiata ai miei vecchi post).
Thessaloniki is the largest city in Greece after Athens, so it has its own airport, with very cheap flights. The airport is not far from the center of the city: the link bus is the number 78.
It's was just due to the low prices of the flights that I found myself in this city (to spend the summer holidays in the Chalkidiki Peninsula and in the enchanting Meteora), that I imagined more cute and cozy.
Thessaloniki shows signs of nefarious and not rational policies(even in the old town there are only ugly buildings of the '70s): admiring it from the top, it seems a shantytown.
But this city is a great point to reach beautiful greek locations, such as Chalkidiki or Meteora, easily reached by public transport (for more info, read my old posts).
Ad ogni modo, anche se la città non è di certo invitante, per pochi giorni non annoia di sicuro.
Salonicco è sede di un'importante università, che richiama giovani studenti da tutte le parti del mondo, che riempiono, a qualsisi ora della giornata, i tanti e sempre diversi bar e locali.
La zona più carina dove vi consiglio di mangiare è Ladadika, l'unica strada che conserva qualche architettura del passato e sulla quale si affacciano numerose e caratteristiche taverne (leggi qui per sapere cosa mangiare in grecia), ma ricca di caffetterie e locali di ogni genere è anche la piazza principale, Piazza Aristotelous, che ospita la statua del grande filosofo.
However, even if the city is certainly not inviting, for a few days it is not boring.
In Thessaloniki there is an important university, which attracts young students from all over the world, filling, at any hour of the day, many restaurants and city streets.
The nicest area where I recommend you eat is Ladadika, the only street that preserves some architecture of the past and which is surrounded by characteristic tavernas (read here to know what to eat in Greece), but also the main square, Aristotelous Square, is full of cafés and pubs of every kind.
Se non sapete resistere al richiamo dei monumenti, poi, ecco cosa c'è da vedere:
- partendo dall'enorme Piazza Aristotelous e percorrendo il moderno lungomare, vi troverete davanti alla Torre Bianca, uno dei simboli di Salonicco. Si tratta di una torre fortificata, ben conservata, che ospita una mostra permanete dedicata alla storia della città (6euro il biglietto intero, gratis per gli studenti). Questa torre risale al 15 secolo, epoca in cui fu edificata per uno scopo difensivo, che perse, poi, durante l'occupazione Ottomana, diventando una prigione e un luogo di tortura.
Solo dopo la liberazione di Salonicco, la torre fu dipinta di bianco, al fine di purificarla dal sangue, e anche se il bianco è ormai scomparso, la costruzione continua a conservare questo simbolico nome.
If you can't resist the lure of the monuments, then, that's what you can see:
-starting from the huge Aristotelous Square and walking along the modern boardwalk, you will find yourself in front of the White Tower, a symbol of Thessaloniki. It is a fortified tower, well preserved, which houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the city (6 euros the entire ticket, free for students). It dates from the 15th century, when it was born with a defensive function, that lost, then, during the Ottoman occupation, when it was used as a prison and place of torture.
Only after the liberation of Thessaloniki, the tower was painted with white colour, in order to purify from the blood, and although the white is now gone, the tower continues to retain this symbolic name.
Non distante dalla Torre Bianca troverete anche la statua di Alessandro Magno; l'opera d'arte moderna realizzata con soli ombrelli, celebre in tutto il mondo; e la fermata del bus (numero 50) che, per soli 2 euro, effettua, ogni ora, tour turistici in giro per la città.
Not far from the White Tower you will find, then, the statue of Alexander the Great and the work of modern art made with umbrellas, famous all over the world.
Also near the White Tower there is the bus (number 50) that, for just 2 euros, makes, every hour, sightseeing tours around the city.
Le tappe del tour sono molteplici, ma lo stato di conservazione della maggior parte dei monumenti (pessimo) rende davvero difficile individuare le opere d'arte.
I monumenti più significativi sono: la fortezza, nella parte alta della città, da cui si può godere di un gran panorama; Agios Dimitros, chiesa principale (stranamente ben tenuta); l'arco di Galerio, nel centro della città e i bagni turchi, a Piazza Aristotelous, molto particolari, ma in pessimo stato (se avete tempo,però, dateci un'occhiata).
The tour stops are varied, but the state of preservation of most of the monuments (bad) does not allow to understand that you are in front of a work of art.
The most important monuments are: the fortress, at the top of the city, from where you can enjoy a great view; Agios Dimitrios, the main church of the city (strangely well maintained); the Arch of Galerius, in the city center and Turkish baths, at Aristotelous Square, very particular, but in a very bad state (however, take a look).
Riguardo agli alloggi, non è difficile trovare hotel centrali a prezzi convenienti.
Comunque, come avrete capito, Salonicco non è una città 'bella' da visitare(e non credo sia una mia opinione): anche se dotata di un grande potenziale, il decoro urbano e l'attenzione ai monumenti lasciano davvero a desiderare.
La sua vivace vita notturna, però, la rende sicuramente piacevole per qualche giorno.

About accommodation, it is not hard to find hotels at affordable prices in the city center.
However, Thessaloniki isn't a city 'nice' to visit (and I don't think that it is a my opinion): although it has a great potential, urban decor and attention to the monuments are terrible.
But its vibrant nightlife makes the city nice for a few days.
